Welcome to Neurosky: Mind Control in Your Living Room

Think mind control is something out of a sci-fi movie? Think again. A startup out of, you guessed it, Silicon Valley is developing technology that will revolutionize the way consumers interact with their products. They’re called Neurosky and they have developed a ‘Thinkgear’ module. Here’s how it works, the non-invasive headset (no gels or glue), uses sensors to detect eye movement, brain waves, and bio-signals. These signals are then translated into commands using advanced algorithm libraries.
Simple right? Though the technology may be complex, the applications of the science are immediate and tangible. Take for instance a demo Neurosky uses to demonstrate. Here a video game player dons the headset. The device works like a game controller or even a TV remote. But in the online world the player need only focus on a specific object. By increasing your level of focus, comfort, or anxiety you can make objects move, levitate, and best of all smash opponents.
But this mind reading technology goes way beyond just gaming. Mechanical applications may soon allow us to vacuum with our minds, change the channel, even cook! More practical are the applications for safety in work and play. Say a construction worker can’t focus on the job, Neurosky technology can ensure that he doesn’t endanger his and other’s safety. Falling asleep at the wheel? A sensor may one day crank up the volume or blast the AC on those long drives back from the office. It’s revolutionary, it’s changing the landscape of modern life, and it’s here now. Welcome to Neurosky.

Apple TV gets 160GB disk… and YouTube too

That’s right, Google’s YouTube is coming to Steve’s little AppleTV "hobby" as he described it during his gig at D. The little treat Steve left out at the show is a new build-to-order 160GB disk; 4x the original capacity offered by Apple at launch. Of course both of these hacks were already available for you DIYers. Still, it’s always good to get it via official channels, eh? The new AppleTV with beefier hard disk will be available tomorrow for $399 while the free YouTube update will be available in mid-June.
