I for one, have heard enough of the "maybes" and "possibles" – I want to see a city-wide wireless network in place! I don;’t even care which city. Just get it done, people!

Yesterday, Sprint and Motorola did a live demo of Sprint’s Xohm-branded, mobile WiMax service on the Chicago River.

Live video feed, even in full-screen mode, was very good and websites "loaded quickly and seemed very snappy" without any lag. The laptops used for the demonstration "all had massive PCMCIA cards" with 2x antenna while the Motorola handsets were all existing models stuffed with WiMax guts.

Here is the news we want – commercial launch is planned for April 2008 with pricing expected to match home DSL and no contracts! You do have to supply your own hardware and subscribe for as long as you like.

wireless subs infinity jbl Wireless Subwoofers

Available in January 2008, JBL’s Cinema Sound CSS10W subwoofers offer wireless connectivity. Infinity’s PS212W is a 12" subwoofer with a 400 watt amplifier that features a built in wireless transceiver. An included 2.4GHz transmitter connects to the preamp or receiver and sends signals to the sub, with four selectable channels for "interference-free" operation. Having personally witnessed a bloodbath between a microwave oven, cordless phone, and wireless router for the same slice of 2.4GHz pie, I’m inclined to take that "interference-free" part with a big grain of salt. The Infinity retails for $679.

Shipping now is the $129 Belkin 5-port Network USB Hub which works with an existing wireless router to give wireless access to peripherals. It works by simulating a direct USB connection, tricking the computer into thinking the devices on the network are directly attached to it, thereby letting you use USB 2.0 devices at full speed.

The company does warn that the system doesn’t support some high-speed/high-bandwidth USB devices such as HD-streaming webcams or other video-transfer applications.

alaska airlines wifi High WiFi

Alaska Airlines has just announced that it will bring inflight wireless Internet connectivity sometime next year, based on Row 44’s satellite-based broadband connectivity solution. The system will first be tested on a next-generation Boeing 737 aircraft next spring. Depending on the outcome, plans will be formulated to equip its 114-aircraft fleet. About time, if you ask me.
