Trailing behind SanDisk by only two months, Toshiba’s version will provide plenty of room for all of the things you hold dear in life. The Toshiba cards are slated for mass production in January of next year. A price range has not been set yet but expect something similar to the competition. Thank God. My hard drive was getting perilously close to filled.

Toshiba has announced it will be shipping their 500GB laptop drive in December, in time for the holiday season. The 500GB drive has a similar feature set to other drives. It’s 9.5mm, features a 2.5-inch 3Gbps SATA interface, 1.4 watt idle power draw and a 5,400rpm spin. It does lack full-disk hardware encryption, however. Toshiba has offered no word on the price.

The Sony laptop battery recall has hit 100,000, tripling in size since yesterday’s announcement that 35,000 were being recalled due to overheating problems. The recall now includes Li-ion batteries used in some Lenovo and Acer laptops as well as the original list of Dells, HPs and Toshibas. All of the recalled models were sold between 2004 and 2005, with two-thirds being sold outside of the US. Sony also noted that the faulty batteries were made by the same factory that produced a batch of recalled batteries two years ago.

Toshiba has issued a press release and a demo video of the prototype of their automated volleyball bot. This bot has been making the robotics rounds for over a decade now and it’s good to finally see some new information.

The bot can recognize spoken commands, react to incoming spheres, identify the actions of nearby people and even spike a volleyball at will. The company has released no word on whether or not this bot would be receiving a commercial push nor have they indicated any other potential uses for the technology.

Toshiba didn’t want Samsung to get all the aclaim with its 1.8 inch 160GB HDD, so they went out and made a 320GB 2.5 inch drive. Yes, that would be the largest 2.5 inch drive, so essentially, Toshiba matched Samsung (short-lasting) record for record. What’s even niftier about the MK3252GSX drive is that, unlike its closest competitor, Fujitsu’s 300GB, it runs at 5400RPM rather than 4200RPM. Other specs include an 8MB buffer, 12ms average seek time, and a 3Gbps SATA interface. It’s also very thin, at only 9.5mm tall. No word on pricing, but they should start showing up in notebooks near you around November.
