This is significantly better than the unit’s usual price of $2,290. Modification kits are being sent out to a network of authorized modders, and a local representative will contact you once you place an order for the upgrade. The service, however, will not be applicable for newer aluminum Macbook models. Sorry early adopters.

© Copyright <a

See, I spend most of my day behind a computer, rarely (never?) getting out in the wild where things must be built tough to survive.

So, I’d love to get this military-grade Tablet PC just so I could pretend to have a real life. This thing can withstand anything, dirt, sand, water, hot and cold, etc., etc. And, it’s well-equipped with Core 2 Duo, Bluetoth, and GPRS. Battery life is supposed to be six hours, as well, which would be impressive. No pricing yet, but I would expect to pay through the nose for this sort of toughness.

© Copyright <a

Oh, sure, it has all the usual stuff, 12.1 inch screen, less than four pounds, ultra-low voltage Core 2 Duo processor choices, etc., etc. But that 12.1 inch screen is no ordinary LCD. No, it has LED-backlighting along with its digitzer, promising to overcome one of the biggest weaknesses of Tablet PCs: dim screens. Pricing ranges from a bare-bones unit at $1,649 up to $2,478 for a fully-loaded monster. But, nobody knows when it’ll be released, so all this goodness is moot at the moment.

© Copyright <a

At $1,000 for a moderately equipped and somewhat oddly configured UMPC, it’s likely not to be in many places at all. Odd spelling aside, the marketing folks have gone a little crazy here, I think.

Still, it’s a decent enough little device, with a 1GHz Via processor, 802.11g Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0, 512MB RAM, and a 40GB HDD. No keyboard, of course, as is the wont with the typical UMPC. USB ports bracket the somewhat clunky looking system, whose 7-inch screen with 800X480 resolution is pretty mainstream. It’s also relatively slow, and it doesn’t seem to use Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, rather bundling its own handwriting recognition on standard Windows XP.

That’s a huge strike against it. Remember, though, that many UMPC’s push $2,000, and so at half that price the ever-present, er, UBiQUiO 701 may fit the bill for many.

© Copyright <a
