T-Mobile Lowers G1 Price in the UK

Although T-Mobile only launched the Google Android G1 phone a little over a month ago on October 30, they’ve already started slashing prices to move them. Initially customers in the UK had to sign a £40 monthly contract in order to get the phone for free. Now new customers can get a free phone for a £30 tariff.

It sucks to be an early adopter.

Industry insiders say the price cut was necessary to help "overcome fierce competition from other high-end devices." T-Mobile denies the claim.

A T-Mobile spokesperson said:

"We have chosen to offer the device free with a £30 contract to make the pricing more competitive in light of recent device launches. We are well on track to achieve our sales forecasts."

Price cuts are always a good thing, as long as the quality of service doesn’t decline along with the price.

Coder Develops App to Enable Multi-Touch in G1

The G1 generally gets good reviews but one of the things reviewers note, across the board, is the absence of multi-touch support. A coder named Ryan Gardner has solved that problem. He authored an app that proves the G1 hardware will support the ability to use two fingers at once.

See for yourself in the video below. Gardner promises to post the app as soon as he finishes tidying up the code. Now the question remains, why wasn’t it already implemented by the original G1 software coders? Curious. Curious indeed.

Google G1 Android Ships with Reboot Bug

Reports are coming in that Android has shipped with a rather peculiar bug: The OS interprets every word as a command, and if you open up the keyboard and type r-e-b-o-o-t the G1 will do just that.

It will activate with other commands as well, so best avoid combinations of rm and rf. The bug affects any G1 with firmware version 1.0 TC4-RC29 or earlier. If you’ve already downloaded the RC30 update, then you are good.

T-Mobile Announces Cameo Line of Digital Picture Frames

T-Mobile has announced a line of digital picture frames, called Cameo. These Parrot-sourced frames feature integrated GSM hardware and a dedicated phone number users can send pictures to from afar via MMS or email. The frame will cost $99.99 with a $9.99 monthly charge to keep the frame’s line active for incoming photos. The company has yet to reveal a launch date for the item.

T-Mobile Offers Motorola MOTOZINE ZN5 for $99 With Contract

T-Mobile has officially become the first carrier in North America to offer Motorola’s MOTOZINE ZN5. The ZN5 is a quadband EDGE handset with WiFi, a morphing keypad and a 5-megapixel camera. The camera features xenon flash and a suite of Kodak imaging software. T-Mobile is only charging $99 for the unit, however that deal comes with the promise of a two year contract. Look for the ZN5 in T-Mobile stores and online starting today.

T-Mobile Offers Firmware Upgrade for G1 – Able to be Manually Installed

T-Mobile’s RC29 upgrade for their G1 arrives on November 11th. For the impatient, there is a way to manually force the upgrade. Simply download the update and move it to a MicroSD card. That’s pretty much it. T-Mobile has warned that the manual upgrade isn’t officially supported, so if you muck up your G1 you are on your own. Also, the company has yet to reveal exactly what is on the upgrade. Curious yet?

T-Mobile G1 Now Successfully Unlocked

The T-Mobile G1 has now been successfully unlocked. The geniuses at Unlock-TMobileG1.com have come to the rescue of T-Mobile haters world-wide. The only downside is that they are charging $23 for the unlock codes.

Call me crazy, but I find a fundamental problem PAYING for unlock codes to a phone running an open-source OS. I guess it’s better than T-Mobile’s 90 day unlock policy but still, I don’t like it!

T-Mobile Raises Pricing on Data Plans

Rumor has it that T-Mobile are going to start experiencing a price hike starting the beginning of November on most data plans. Not all customers will be affected. The Blackberry unlimited data plans are supposed to stay the same but other plans may experience a data cap in addition to price increase.

With great speed comes great responsibility. I guess T-Mobile is trying to offset the cost of rolling out spotty 3G services. Now you can pay more for your crappy service.

Android Market Officially Opens to All Developers Today

Starting today, any developer can register and upload their own applications to the Android market. The apps require no approval from the powers that be. This should result in a tidal wave of original content for the platform. Developers of the mobile platform will also be providing would-be programmers with a device that tests their apps and readies them for upload.
