Review: Blackberry Storm on Verizon

Although the official launch of the upcoming Blackberry Storm on the Verizon network is tomorrow, November 21st, initial reviews are coming in from those fortunate enough to have received an eval unit. Their reports are that RIM falls short of the "perfect" Storm.

The smartphone’s major innovation is called SurePress, which means that the phone’s entire touchscreen is a gigundo button but this is the company’s first venture into the touchscreen arena.

The Pros:

The SurePress button screen has a very nice feel to it
The screen is the highest resolution screen ever produced by RIM, 480×360 resolution
Verizon 3G rocks! It’s better and more stable than AT&T’s network.
GPS
Copy and paste (Take that iPhone!)
Blackberry email
It has the best blackberry browser

The Cons:

Heavy and clunky
Ok battery life but not a major problem
Where’s the WiFi???
OS lags at times

Overall, the Blackberry Storm makes for an OK phone, but still no iPhone killer. As a Bold user, I’m not at all jealous of the touchscreen. It’s still probably going to be a big hit on the Verizon Wireless network.

A Warning For Your iPod

This has recently been on the news, so it might slightly more credible that a rumor lurking in a message board. Everyone has been subject to a rather nasty thunderstorm, the kind that sets off all the car alarms and uproots all the trees in the neighborhood. As you may have noticed, whether through unfortunate circumstances or otherwise, any small electronic objects that are on your person at the time are not safe, especially iPods.

Three people have been made the example of this. The first gentlemen from Canada suffered major burns, ruptured eardrums and a broken jaw as a result of lightning running through the wires in his earplugs. The second person, a teenager from Colorado, was struck by lightening as he was mowing the grass while listening to his iPod. Another teen from Colorado was struck by lightning as it hit a nearby tree and bounced off onto him. He was at the time listening to Metallica and also mowing the grass (Coincidence? You decide).

This phenomenon is, of course, caused by the metal pieces inside the iPod. Even if the supposed lightning storm sounds miles away, there is still a chance that the lightning will hit you while you are unsuspectingly listening to music. This is not at all in the way that lightning will be attracted to the metal rod on someone’s roof, so there is a very slim chance of lightning actually hitting you. However, if you were to be hit, then the metal on your body will cause for even greater damage.

So, the lesson of this story is, be careful using an iPod when spending time outside during a major storm. You may come back with more that just wet clothes.

Mars Dust Storms Threaten Rovers

Space.com is reporting a potentially dangerous dust storm which right now, covers the entire southern hemisphere of Mars. It is reducing direct sunlight to Mars’ surface by nearly 99 percent, and the Rovers are solar-powered. Even though they are battery-powered, being without sunlight for a long time could drain the batteries and then they would not be able to recharge at all.

"This thing has been breaking records the past few days. The sun is 100 times fainter than normal. We’re hoping for a big break in the storm soon, but that’s just a hope."
