Dell Offers 32GB SSD Upgrade on Mini 9 Purchases for $100

Dell has added an option to install a 32GB SSD solid state drive to their Dell Mini 9 netbook purchase. It adds an extra $100 to the base price of $349 for the unit, however. Click here to access their online store if you want to take the leap into more speedy memory for your netbook.

The unit comes packed in with a paltry 4GB of SSD drive support so paying $100 for an extra 28GB doesn’t sound like that bad of a deal. To put it in perspective, it costs half that much to make your Mini 9 pink.

Korean Company UMID Announces Mini-laptop – Much Smaller than Netbooks

Korean company UMID has announced their entry into the burgeoning sub-netbook category of computers. This laptop weighs just 315 grams (a little over a half-pound) and is just a shade bigger than the Nintendo DS. Still, the insides still pack quite a punch. The unit contains a 1.33GHz Atom Processor, 1GB of RAM and up to 32GB of storage via SSD. It also features WiBro, WiMAX, HSDPA, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. The unit also has a 1.3-megapixel camera and a 4.8-inch 1024 x 600 touchscreen. The tiny netbook can run XP, Vista or Linux. The company has yet to release word on pricing or release date.

New Macbook Air Released – Integrated Graphics Included

The new MacBook Air has been released, with some definitive upgrades from the original. Apple has replaced the awkward microDVI plug with the new mini DisplayPort plug. Under the hood, the unit features integrated graphics (NVIDIA 9400M) and booting has been said to take a paltry twenty-five seconds. The new MacBook Air also features a 128GB SSD. The unit is out now and costs approximately $1,799.

ASUS CEO Says $200 Eee PC in 2009

Jerry Shen, CEO of ASUS, noted recently that his company would release an Eee PC priced at US$200 in 2009. He also noted to a group of analysts that the 7- and 8.9 inch Eee PCs would be discontinued to make room for the 10-inch model. Shen did not clarify as to whether or not that meant the 10-inch Eee PC would be $200. He also gave the group some figures, noting that 70% of all Eee PCs now come loaded with Windows XP and hard disk drives compared to 30% that come loaded with Linux and SSDs.

Augmentix XTG630 Has Your Back

Take a Dell Latitude, slap on some military-grade protective materials, waterproof it, and design it for temperature extremes from -4F to 140F, and what do you have? The Augmentix XTG630, one tough notebook. The specs aren’t too shabby, either:

14.1 inch LCD
Core 2 Duo processor
Up to 4GB RAM
Removable 80GB HDD plus 32GB SSD
Intel GMA X3100 integrated graphics
Bluetooth 2.0
802.11 a/g/n (draft)
EVDO or HSDPA
All the ports any rugged type would need

It can function in 4-inches of rain an hour and 95% humidity, and take a fall from up to 3 feet. Makes me feel like a weak, frail being, because I certainly couldn’t handle some of that abuse.

Sony Goes Insane, Adds SSD to VAIO For $Billions

Let me say that, even though I’m a sucker for ultraportable notebooks, and I think the Sony Vaio TZ18GN is a nifty machine with some nice specs:

11.1-inch LCD
32GB SSD
Core 2 Duo
1GB RAM
2.5lbs

I still feel that $4,300 is a lot to pay for a notebook that’s not some sort of crazy beefed-up 21-inch monster desktop gaming replacement rig. And the striking thing to me is that the SSD option adds "only" $700, which means that the standard HDD version of this puppy is $3,600 if my math doesn’t fail me. And that’s a lot, as well. And, yes, of course, Sony’s not really asking for $billions.

More SSD Goodness from Alienware

Leave it to Alienware to be one of the first to offer SSD, like the 32GB or 64GB SSDs they’re offering in their M9750, M9700, and M5550 systems. They’re even offering an 64GB SSD RAID-0 configuration, along with a 32GB SSD coupled with a 200GB standard HDD to combine speed with storage. As always, SSD will provide more speed with less power, and since the technology probably came from Area 51, it makes perfect sense that Alienware should be one of the first to offer them. Of course, you’ll pay for the luxury: from $500 for the 32GB solo to $920 for the 64GB RAID configuration.

Buffalo Releases Some Portable SSD Lovin’

The Buffalo SHD-UH 56GB SSD portable unit is svelte, quiet, power-efficient, and, well, SSD. There’s just something magical about removing all those moving parts required just to store stuff in a hard drive. No release date for the 56GB monster (priced at about $783, youch!), but 8GB, 16GB, and 24GB should be released in late July. No pricing on those, though. So, if SSD’s are your thing as much as they are mine, start saving those pennies, kids!

Toshiba R500 Not Already Good Enough – Gets 3G Upgrade

If Toshiba does nothing else right, it makes a mean ultraportable. Take the R500, for instance, an under-2 lb. system with Core 2 Duo, up to 64GB SSD, all current Wi-Fi flavors, Bluetooth, and a lovely form factor in general. As if that wasn’t enough, Toshiba’s throwing in an HSDPA module (well, "throwing in" might be a stretch, I’m sure there’ll be a cost). Pricing is currently at $1,999, so not the world’s cheapest, but certainly reasonable for what must be one of the premier ultraportables currently being sold.

Some 32GB SSD Goodness from Transcend

If you’re lucky enough to own a notebook with an ExpressCard slot (which is many newer notebooks these days), you can easily add a 32GB solid-state drive (SSD) thanks to Transcend. They’re faster, can take more punishment, and use less power, but they’re also mighty expensive: this model will set you back $509. Ouch, but no pain, no gain, as they say. Oh, and it includes a USB 2.0 adapter for those unlucky souls without an ExpressCard slot; no word if this makes an impact on performance.
