Twin Solid State Musical Tesla coils playing Mario Bros theme song at the 2007 Lightning on the Lawn Teslathon sponsored by DC Cox (Resonance Research Corp) in Baraboo WI. The music that you hear is coming from the sparks that these two identical high power solid state Tesla coils are generating. There are no speakers involved. The Tesla coils stand 7 feet tall and are each capable of putting out over 12 foot of spark. They are spaced about 18 feet apart. The coils are controlled over a fiber optic link by a single laptop computer. Each coil is assigned to a midi channel which it responds to by playing notes that are programed into the computer software.

In light of the new Simpsons Movie, I felt that Nerdgrind should at least have SOMETHING written about it. So here’s the best Science/Tech quote that I could find. Thank you Homer Simpson.

"Lisa, in this house we OBEY the laws of thermodynamics!"

nasa space shuttle space station sci Blast Off

On August 7, the Endeavour will launch itself into space once again this year.  Teacher/Astronaut Christa McAuliff has been waiting 22 years for this day and will operate the shuttle’s robotic arm, transfer cargo, and even report to students at three different schools from space.  It would’ve been nice to have my science teacher teach astronomy from space.

art.ancient.greenland Greenland=Really Green

Research has shown that Greenland did once have green landscapes a half million years ago. Research was gathered in south central Greenland by drilling through ice 1.2 miles thick. Traces of DNA were found that gave traces of several species of trees, such as pine and yew, as well as insects such as butterflies and moths.

"These findings allow us to make a more accurate environmental reconstruction of the time period from which these samples were taken, and what we’ve learned is that this part of the world was significantly warmer than most people thought," Martin Sharp, a glaciologist at the University of Alberta, Canada, and a co-author of the paper, said in a statement.

Ladies, go nuts. Scientists at Edinburgh University have developed a high-pressure procedure that can turn peanut butter into diamonds. Before you get excited and call the Ministry of Magic, rest assured that peanut butter is just ONE of the many carbon-containing materials that will work in what is called the "stilleto-heel effect." Here’s the thing, though – do diamonds taste as good as peanut butter and do they come in either chunky or smooth? I think not.
