OK, so it looks like a cross between a cat and a pig, but this new helmet are made so that fighter pilots can see right through the jet.

Inside the faceplate, images from outside cameras can be viewed so that the pilot can get a real-time picture of where he/she is.

Other info fed in via the faceplate include flight and combat data, as well as target symbols of friendlies / enemies.

Goat Sacrifice Fixes Mechanical Problems

Yup, in the 21st century we have goats sacrificed on an airport runway to "fix" airplane problems.

Nepal Airlines has a "fleet" of two 757s. One of them has been plagued with mechanical problems. So what do we do in the year 2007? Sacrifice some goats, of course!

A photograph was published showing this sacrifice and the photographer was later detained for hours.

Flying Car Design Winner

NASA awarded $250,000 in prize money this weekend to teams competing to build and fly a small-seat plane that could one day be a prototype for so-called air cars. And the $100,000 winner is….Pipistrel Virus, a $70,000 aircraft that can do 50 MPG and take off on short runways.

"Only 682 pounds empty weight complete–it literally carries more useful load, that is passengers, fuel, and baggage, than the aircraft weighs." said Mark Moore, an aerospace engineer at NASA.

A highly modified kit plane, a Vans RV-4, won $25,000 in the speed challenge and another $50,000 for emitting the least amount of noise on its flight. Finally, the team flying a Cessna 172, the most popular small plane in production since the 40s, won $25,000 for handling.

"The results make sense–the Cessna 172 is the most successful (and highest production volume small aircraft) precisely for the reason that the handling qualities are so good," said Mark Moore.

American Airlines WiFi in the Sky

American Airlines is joining other carriers like Lufthansa and Qantas, to provide its passengers with WiFi access via AirCell.

Beginning with the Boeing 767-200 aircraft, which primarily fly transcontinental route, the service is an air-to-ground network.

“We understand that broadband connectivity is important to our business customers and others who want to use their PDAs and laptops for real-time, in-flight broadband communications,” said Dan Garton, Executive Vice President – Marketing for American Airlines. “This is part of our continuing effort to take the lead in enhancing the travel experience for our customers and meet their evolving needs.”
“Travelers are already bringing their own Wi-Fi enabled devices onto planes,” said Jack Blumenstein, AirCell CEO. “Bringing broadband access onto domestic flights at an everyday, affordable price provides travelers the opportunity to recapture time. Making productive use of the time in the air will give them time back on the ground with family or just relaxing.”

The cost of this service has yet to be announced, but I will gladly give up the food for this!

United Airlines is upgrading passenger comfort with lie-flat seating, and the Business cabin gets cool gadgets like new 15.4-inch LCDs, a USB port, and an iPod adapter to let you charge your iPod and play your own music and videos on the seat’s entertainment unit. You will have 20 channels of "stored XM audio," with an additional 30 channels of other "stored audio." They will even give you noise canceling headphones. No word on meals though…
