iRiver Phone is Elegant and Beautiful

Full tech specs have yet to be released about the upcoming iRiver phone, but one thing is for sure, it has the mark of beauty. The iRiver phone has been announced that it will be available starting March 9th 2009. I doubt that it will come to American soil any time soon, but it will definitely be out on Korean carrier KT.

What we do know about the phone is the inclusion of a large touchscreen, Wi-Fi, joystick navigation and handwriting recognition.

No pricing details have been released but you’ll probably be able to check it out at CES 2009.

Lenovo to Develop Android Phone for China

China Mobile said no to HTC’s G1 Android phone and has opted to go with the Lenovo Mobile version instead. The device is said to be released in 2009 sometime in February or March. Not much else is known about the phone.

The announcement was made at the P&T/Expo Comm China 2008 in Beijing, by a Lenovo manager. Although in the west, Lenovo is mainly known for laptops, Lenovo is also known in china for manufacturing cell phones and smartphones.

Samsung Bucks Economy and Sells 52 Million Phones Last Quarter

Samsung managed to sell 52 million phones last quarter, besting Sony and coming within spitting distance of the Apple iPhone. However, the company’s overall profit is still down 44 percent, due to aggressive pricing and marketing. Samsung’s profits for last quarter were a respectable $850 million dollars. Not too shabby.

The handset division led sales for the company, clocking in at 52 million phones sold. This could be accounted by Samsung’s recent adoption of the "Nokia strategy", which features big pushes at both the high and low ends of the market. Samsung has managed to prove that although times are tough, the financial storm can be weathered.

Introducing the Pharos’ Traveller 117 and 127 WinMo phones

Back in the halcyon days of, oh, eighteen months ago, the Pharos’ line of GPS-equipped Windows Mobile Handsets were the coolest thing going. Imagine a phone that knows where you are! It was like magic. Then came the iPhone and it’s ilk, all of whom were also rocking some serious GPS mojo. The Pharos’ line stopped seeming magical and started seeming like the way a bar looks when they turn the main lights on in order to scare the last few alcoholics out for the night.

No more! Pharos’ is back with the Dell powered Traveller 117 and Traveller 127. Sure, they come equipped with AGPS out of the box. That’s not what makes them special though. The Traveller series also possesses a VGA display, tri-band 7.2Mbps downstream HSPA and a 2-megapixel VGA front facing-camera.

They are for sale "covertly" at the Dell online store. Shh. Don’t tell anybody I told you.

Sprint HTC Touch Pro faces delay

Those of you looking forward to, um, tomorrow’s launch of the Sprint HTC Touch Pro, prepare for a bubble burst. It’s not happening. Sprint cites the reason as an inventory issue. That’s certainly better than if the reason was a bug that caused your data service to only open e-mail by purveyors of penis pills. That’d be bad.

Sprint says to look for the device, for real this time, in early November. Let’s hold them to that.

Icono Gives the Finger to Traditional Phones

One look at the photo above and you can see that Zinc Chan’s Icono Finger phone concept is both intriguing and dorky at the same time. The phone has you plugging your thumb and little finger into a mic and speaker so as to become the perfect half-man/half-phone beast. The hand gesture you are forced to adopt while using the phone makes it a sure hit amongst the surfing and skateboarding set. Totally gnarley!

The dialpad also attempts to reinvent the wheel, turning phone numbers into a series of sequential shapes. All of this oddness places the phone squarely into the "curiosity" department. However, the design certainly is top notch. Cute girl not included.

BlackBerry Bold found to cost $170 to produce

A research firm called iSuppli did a bit of snooping and found that the forthcoming BlackBerry Bold costs $169.14 to produce. The firm announced that parts and materials total up to $158.16 and testing and assembly costs $11.25. The consultation fee paid to John McCain was not mentioned in the report.

This should em’bold’en RIM as they will likely find no problem selling the unit to carriers for $350. Good thing, too. There is a rumor going around that we are in a recession. Don’t worry though. Should it worsen, RIM has already begun work on the "BlackBerry Paper Cup Telephone." It won’t have data service.

iPhone and iPod touch web site Springlets adds quick search bookmarklets to your device’s home screen for commonly searched sites like Wikipedia, IMDB, and a handy Google I’m Feeling Lucky search, among others. If you’re using an iPhone, Springlets can also add speed dial shortcuts to the home screen. On the iPhone, more even than on your desktop, loading entire web pages just to find a search box is a major waste of time, which makes Springlets a brilliant little idea. Are you tired of having to match a phone you like to a service that you don’t? Verizon is coming out with a rational consumer-based idea. By the end of 2008, Verizon Wireless will be available to customers regardless of the phones they have – as long as the phones meet a "minimum technical standard." We’ll know more next year – but that is only a month away!
