NTT DoCoMo’s forward-looking video overlooks the present

We’ve seen prophets get their agendas past the marketing department a time or two before, but NTT DoCoMo’s latest peek into the "future" seemingly forgets to look at what’s actually available right now. The lengthy spot showcases how mobile phones will "one day" be even more tightly integrated into our everyday lives, and while the ideas of using mobile-based keychains and passwords, geo-locators, and video telephony are certainly novel, deeming them events of the future seems a bit ignorant. Additionally, it demonstrates the phone’s ability to assist with grocery shopping, take care of hailing a cab, act as a tutor, and prevent children from straying too far away — all of which have either already been implemented or are quite a ways along the development pipeline. Of course, the pen-sized handset with retractable holographic display certainly hasn’t hit mainstream channels just yet, but otherwise it seems we’re all way ahead of our time.

NerdFind – Palm Foleo Mobile Companion

palm foleo 4001 NerdFind Palm Foleo Mobile Companion

Even though I am a loyal Apple fan, I am very interested in Palm’s newest addition: The Foleo Mobile Companion. It is a 10-inch wide, Linux-based device that connects wirelessly to your Treo Smartphone and functions similar to that of a large screen and keyboard. While this could mean that the Mobile Companion is none other than an old-fashioned laptop, bear in mind, laptops are much bigger and heavier and don’t connect automatically to your phone. The Foleo contains Bluetooth technology and can be used for working on email or Microsoft documents when the Treo thumb pad proves cumbersome.

This product will be available in the summer at the retail price of $499, after a $100 mail-in rebate.

British PSPs to get voice and video calls courtesy of BT

Share  submit to reddit

You lucky PSP-ownin’ Brits. BT has developed custom VoIP software for use with PSPs fitted with new Go!Cams (pictured below). Using the Go!Cam’s mic and camera, PSP punters will initially be able to make voice and video calls to other PSP users and some BT phones across the UK. Eventually, BT will distribute the software globally and allow users to call PCs, fixed line phones and mobiles from any WiFi hotspot. The new service takes advantage of BT’s 21 century network (21CN) designed specifically for IP technologies. Now the bad news: while the Go!Cams are scheduled for release on 25 May in the UK, BT won’t be providing any additional detail on the PSP VoIP service until sometime in August. Sneaky sneaky.
