Motorola Leaks Information on the QA30A – First QWERTY Slider by Company

Motorola is getting ready to add the QA30 to their Q-Series lineup. The phone comes with a sliding QWERTY keypad. However, it’s not necessarily not a smartphone. The specs aren’t going to wow anyone but they are adequate.

It features CDMA, 1x-EVDO connectivity, a 2.5-inch TFT, Full HTML browser, a 2 MP camera, Bluetooth and MicroSD card support up to 32GB. This seems like a fairly solid choice for those of you looking for a cheap QWERTY. Moto offers no word on when and how much, however.

Motorola Razr Saves Life Of New Orleans Man By Stopping Bullet

New Orleans resident Ronald Richard was mowing his lawn when he felt something thump his chest hard. He took off his sweater and found that a .45-caliber slug had been fired at him. His trusty Motorola Razr had stopped it. The phone quite literally took a bullet for him.

According to paramedics, the angle of the bullet and the stopping power of the cellphone saved the man from serious injury or death. Richard managed to walk away with little more than a bruise and a newfound respect for his trusty little phone.

Apple iPhone 3G Overtakes Motorola RAZR in Sales

According to a report from NPD, Apple’s iPhone 3G has overtaken Motorola’s RAZR in sales. This is the first time in years that Motorola’s ubiquitous RAZR has slipped from the top of the sales chart. This marks a sea change in the world of handsets, reflecting consumer’s desires for a complex, full-featured device. This news comes hot on the heels of reports that Apple has also overtaken RIM as the number two smartphone vendor in the world. Apple fans, rejoice.

Research Finds Samsung has Taken Over Number One Cellphone Spot Over Motorola

According to research by Strategy Analytics, Samsung is now the leading cellphone vendor in the US. The company’s ascension to the top spot has pushed Motorola into second place. During last quarter, Samsung managed to push it’s sales up 6.2 percent over the previous years results to 47.4 million handsets.

Motorola’s market share fell from 32.7 percent last year to just 21.1 percent this year. Sources indicate this is due to the lack of an Android-type phone until late next year, therefore the company has nothing to compete with the iPhones and the G1s of the world. Sorry Moto.

Motorola Zine ZN5 Hits T-Mobile With 5 Megapixel Camera

With all the commotion about the release of the Blackberry Bold and upcoming Storm, Motorola’s MOTOZINE ZN5 has been placed on the backburner. Starting today though, you will be able to pick up one of these phones at T-Mobile locations or online for only $99 with a two year contract.

For those of you unfamiliar with this phone, it features a 5 megapixel auto-focus Kodak camera with Xenon flash, WiFi, quad-band GSM/EDGE, FM Radio, TV-Out and built-in Kodak instant WiFi uploading to their photo sharing website.

I haven’t been too impressed with Motorola phones in the past but I’m excited and intrigued about the inclusion of a camera in a phone that actually has the ability to take good pictures. Enough of 2 and 3 megapixel cameras with an LED flash. I think Motorola has done it right for once.

T-Mobile Offers Motorola MOTOZINE ZN5 for $99 With Contract

T-Mobile has officially become the first carrier in North America to offer Motorola’s MOTOZINE ZN5. The ZN5 is a quadband EDGE handset with WiFi, a morphing keypad and a 5-megapixel camera. The camera features xenon flash and a suite of Kodak imaging software. T-Mobile is only charging $99 for the unit, however that deal comes with the promise of a two year contract. Look for the ZN5 in T-Mobile stores and online starting today.

Motorola to Layoff 3,000 Employees – Most From Handset Division

Motorola will be laying off 3,000 employees, most of them in the handset division, as part of an $800 million expenditure cut planned for 2009. The company laid out the cut at their recent Q3 earnings call. A spokesperson for the company confirmed that two-thirds of the layoffs would be coming from the handset division.

Motorola Expected to Drop More Jobs as it Makes Room For Android

The Wall Street Journal is reporting today that Sanjay Jha, who formerly worked as a Qualcomm executive and currently cuts his checks as the co-CEO of Motorola, is about to cut jobs in an effort to keep the mobile division above water. This comes as no surprise, as Jha recently told employees that Motorola had two-to-three times the number of employees in their employ than competitors. Cuts will probably number in the "thousands", and could happen as early as Thursday so says the WSJ.

The company has already dropped 10,000 jobs since 2007. In addition to job cuts, Jha says he plans to discontinue plans on production of "dozens of phone designs." Motorola will also be scaling back it’s mobile-OS inventory from about seven to just three: Android for multi-media and Internet showcase phones, Windows Mobile business devices, and its own P2K for low-end phones.

Sanjay will be given $100 million dollars and 3 percent stock if he manages to turn a profit on the mobile phone division by late 2010. If he doesn’t? Jha will receive a paltry $30 million. Boo hoo.

Motorola Releases MOTONAV TN20 and TN30 GPS Devices

Motorola has released two GPS navigators, the MOTONAV TN20 and TN30. The TN20 provides spoken street names and turn-by-turn directions. The unit also offers NAVTEQ 2D / 3D maps of the United States and a 3.5-inch touch panel. The TN30 takes all of those features and adds in maps of Puerto Rico and Canada, along with four million searchable points of interest and a 4.3-inch touchscreen. The TN30 also features Bluetooth headsfree support.

Both units include an SD slot for updating maps, a mini USB port for charging, speed limit display with warnings and on-screen tidbits regarding distance, arrival time, elevation and speed. They are only available at Radio Shack for now at the suggested retail price of $199.99 / $299.99, respectively.

Motorola Aura Luxury Phone Given Hands-on Treatment

The guys over at Mobile Review have secured some face-time with the new Motorola Aura high-end cellphone. They paid special attention to the UI and the functionality of the circular screen, a first for cellphones. The gang seemed pleased with the menus and the precision-engineered rotation mechanism. They also lauded the general "feel" of the phone, adding that the all-metal shape was a joy to hold on to. They did, however, express some reservation with the $2,000 price tag.
