Apple Leaks Release Date of Snow Leopard – Q1 2009

Jordan Hubbard, Director of Apple’s Unix Technology Group, made a mistake by listing the coming release date for Snow Leopard OS X. Hubbard accidentally put it on a slide that was used at a presentation at the LISA (Large Installation System Administration) conference.

Up til now, Apple was commenting only that Snow Leopard would be released "in about a year." Now it looks like it will be coming out in the first quarter of 2009. Steve Jobs must be annoyed at this information leak.

Livescribe Pulse Smartpen Finally Can be Used on Apple Mac OS X

Livescribe has finally enabled their Pulse smartpen for use with Apple’s Mac OS X. PC users have been able to use the pen that transcribes real world handwriting into a digital template. On November 24th, Mac users will be able to as well.

The company has even thrown in some new features for both Apple and Windows users. For an additional $29.95 you can get your hands on some handwriting to text transcription software. Consumers can also print dot paper notepads for free.

Legacy Entertainment Releases USB-enabled Joystick that Looks like Atari Controller

Legacy Entertainment has released a joystick that doubles as an homage to the legendary Atari 2600 controller. The joystick just looks like an Atari controller, however. It’s fully Windows, OS X and Linux compatible and connects via USB. The company claims it will work flawlessly with "nearly any emulator" so you can seek out the original games that the joystick helped make so much fun. It costs just $14.99 and it’s currently available.

Apple’s Safari Fixes

Those reports of Safari bugs were accurate. (I think its a plot!) Apple issued a new version of the public beta of Safari for Windows today — highest on the list of fixes were patches for three separate security vulnerabilities that were uncovered just hours after its first launch.

Here’s the skinny:

CVE-ID: CVE-2007-3186
Available for: Windows XP or Vista
Impact: Visiting a malicious website may lead to arbitrary code execution
Description: A command injection vulnerability exists in the Windows version of Safari 3 Public Beta. By enticing a user to visit a maliciously crafted web page, an attacker can trigger the issue which may lead to arbitrary code execution. This update addresses the issue by performing additional processing and validation of URLs. This does not pose a security issue on Mac OS X systems, but could lead to an unexpected termination of the Safari browser.
CVE-ID: CVE-2007-3185
Available for: Windows XP or Vista
Impact: Visiting a malicious website may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution
Description: An out-of-bounds memory read issue in Safari 3 Public Beta for Windows may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution when visiting a malicious website. This issue does not affect Mac OS X systems.
CVE-ID: CVE-2007-2391
Available for: Windows XP or Vista
Impact: Visiting a malicious website may allow cross-site scripting
Description: A race condition in Safari 3 Public Beta for Windows may allow cross site scripting. Visiting a maliciously crafted web page may allow access to JavaScript objects or the execution of arbitrary JavaScript in the context of another web page. This issue does not affect Mac OS X systems.

Leopard Server Set For October Shipment

The Leopard server, also known as Mac OS 10.5, will soon be ready for release by the end of this year. Among the 250 new features are an iChat server for instant messaging with users on outside systems, as well as an iCal server share calendar information, and wiki server for simplifying publication and maintenance of reference material.

Only Apple can deliver an advanced server operating system packed with over 250 new features on the same day as our client OS," said Philip Schiller, Appleâ€™s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "With no client access licenses, Leopard Server is the most affordable way to bring innovative server features, such as group calendaring and a wiki server, to everyone from small businesses to large educational institutions.

Mac OS X Server 10.5 will cost $499 for the 10-client edition or $999 for unlimited clients.

Beware the BadBunny!

According to Symantec, a new and malicious worm is spreading (dare I say it?) like wildfire within OpenOffice documents. "The worm can infect Windows, Linux and Mac OS X systems," according to a Symantec Security Response advisory. "Be cautious when handling OpenOffice files from unknown sources."

The worm was first spotted late last month, but at the time, it was not thought to be "in the wild."

Once opened, the OpenOffice file, called badbunny.odg, launches a macro that behaves in several different ways, depending on the user’s operating system.

On Windows systems, it drops a file called drop.bad, which is moved to the system.ini file in the user’s mIRC folder. It also executes the JavaScript virus badbunny.js, which replicates to other files in the folder.

On Apple Mac systems, the worm drops one of two Ruby script viruses in files respectively called badbunny.rb and badbunnya.rb.

On Linux systems, the worm drops both badbunny.py as an XChat script and badbunny.pl as a Perl virus.

Symantec rates the worm as a "medium risk."

That is, only if it is not on your computer

As if the Netscape vs IE vs Firefox weren’t enough to confuse a person, another browser is being thrown into the mix.

Apple is shipping the third version of the Safari WebKit-based browser overseas to compete with the big boys (IE, Firefox, and Opera) and … on Windows no less!

The Mac-only browser has a 5% market share, and it wants to copy what iTunes did, namely, to grow the Mac fanbase.

Apple claims their browser is up to twice as fast as the competition, and the public beta of Safari 3 is being released today as a free download for Mac OS X, Windows XP and Windows Vista.

So, which one are you using?
