london1 London Continues to be Leader in World WiFi Access

London continues to be the world capital of WiFi with 12,276 access points, according to the new edition of the annual Wireless Security Survey conducted by RSA. The survey notes that London managed to beat New York City by over 3,000 access points. Paris, however, managed to beat out everyone in the year-by-year increase category. The city featured a 543 percent gain over last year.

NYC did manage to stay on top in the "corporate encryption" category, with about 97 percent of it’s corporate access points requiring a form of encryption. London’s numbers on the matter only reach 80 percent.

We have seen the success of London surveillance cameras in their pursuit of terrorists, and we are finally getting smart here as well.

The New York Times reports that NYC will be installing those London-style cameras to keep track of vehicles and pedestrians. This "Lower Manhattan Security Initiative" will start off with 100 cameras, each of which will be able to read license plates and send out alerts if suspect vehicles are detected. Later, 3,000 public and privately-owned cameras will be put into service in 2008.
