Tree Lights

Posted on December 27, 2007 at 7:50 am (PST)

love Europe in that special way only someone who’s lived exclusively in the United States for 25-odd years really can. Yet another fabulous reason to love Europe are these solar powered light trees, spotted last October in Vienna (as well as in Milan in November and December). Designed by Ross Lovegrove, each tree has 10 [...]

Moon May Take On Proper Role in Lighting Our Streets

Posted on August 11, 2007 at 3:04 pm (PST)

For centuries now, the Moon has complained–to deaf ears, until now–that it could be providing all the street light we need, most of the time. No need for gas or electric streetlights, no sir, not unless there were clouds and such. Finally, someone’s listened, and developed Lunar-Resonant Streetlights, which use LED lamps that adjust lighting [...]

Hold the Sun in Your Hands

Posted on August 6, 2007 at 11:39 am (PST)

2000 Lumens. Check. 20 lithium batteries. Check. Battery life of 1.5 hours. Check. Pricetag of $7000. Check. if you need to shine a light equivalent to 130 "normal" flashlights, then the Surefire Beast II LED is for you. I’m trying to think of an application for this monster, and I’m failing. But I’m sure there’s [...]

Puke

Posted on August 6, 2007 at 6:33 am (PST)

Look out, because here come cops with flashlights that will make you hurl. Intelligent Optical Systems has created this weird flashlight that’s so bright it temporarily blinds you, and then it gets you all disoriented and dizzy. Using special types of really bright LEDs, the flashlight’s beam pulses and flashes while quickly changing its color, [...]

Will LED “Flourescents” Flicker? That’s the Question

Posted on August 5, 2007 at 11:23 am (PST)

Okay, so, the EVERLED LED replacements for fluorescent lights will last twice as long or so (10 years vs. 5-7 years), use 20% less power, and be build from less, shall we say, caustic materials. They’ll be $150, which is quite a bit more than the typical fluorescent light, and I’m in no mood to [...]

Where Once We Used Sticks as Guns, Now We Have These

Posted on July 26, 2007 at 10:37 am (PST)

Jasman Toys is releasing Halo 3 replica weapons so realistic they might get your kids arrested. They have lights, recoil, infrared sensors to register "hits," and vents that open when the device "overheats." I’m putting those in quotes because I’m assuming–assuming, mind you–that it’s all simply simulated. $119 for the Plasma Rifle and $79 for [...]

Posted on July 16, 2007 at 7:10 am (PST)

As posted right here, Taiwan is allocating $7 million to convert 420,000 traffic lights to the LED standard. Not to be outdone, Seville (Spain) is planning to replace its halogen and incandescent traffic lights with LEDs. The price tag is estimated to be €2.3 million, but it will conserve 85% of the energy used now.

This year I’m doing some good for the world, I joined Relay For Life the non-profit organization that raises awareness and money for cancer research. It’s really cool. So, on August 4th I will be dragging around this neat gadget to the track, because I will basically be spending the night there. The blanket [...]

The Propeller Trike

Posted on July 6, 2007 at 3:35 pm (PST)

Damon Vander Lind, an MIT student, partnered with several of his schoolmates and created the pedal-powered propeller tricycle. The tricycle reaches 7 ft. and weighs about 1000 pounds. It made using aircraft-supply chromemoly tubing and old bike parts. The propeller was made from pink foam coated with fiberglass. Oh, and the propeller has LED lights [...]
