Sony has given is an early Christmas with 21, yes 21! new models of the popular VAIO. Four new series include the VAIO A, BX, FZ and G series, each with upgrades.

The top end of the lot are the VAIO A series laptops, with 17-inch displays (1920×1200 on the higher end model), T7100 or T7300 Core 2 Duo processors, up to 2GB of RAM, two 120GB hard drives, an optional Blu-ray drive, and NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics.

Next is the FZ series with 15.4-inch displays, along with Core 2 Duo processors and slightly smaller hard drives.

VAIO BX models offer a choice of 14.1 or 15.4-inch displays, Core 2 Duo processors, up to 2GB of RAM, and a max 120GB hard drive.

Last, but defintely not least, is the VAIO G, with a 12.1-inch display, a Core Solo U1400 processor, 1GB of RAM, and an 80GB hard drive.

They are supposed to start rolling out in July (in Japan) starting at only $900. Look to spend $3,285 for the top end models though.

NerdFind – Palm Foleo Mobile Companion

palm foleo 4001 NerdFind Palm Foleo Mobile Companion

Even though I am a loyal Apple fan, I am very interested in Palm’s newest addition: The Foleo Mobile Companion. It is a 10-inch wide, Linux-based device that connects wirelessly to your Treo Smartphone and functions similar to that of a large screen and keyboard. While this could mean that the Mobile Companion is none other than an old-fashioned laptop, bear in mind, laptops are much bigger and heavier and don’t connect automatically to your phone. The Foleo contains Bluetooth technology and can be used for working on email or Microsoft documents when the Treo thumb pad proves cumbersome.

This product will be available in the summer at the retail price of $499, after a $100 mail-in rebate.

Heavy Duty Portable 8-core NextDimension

Share  submit to reddit

No, the laptop industry hasn’t bypassed the idea of quad-core laptops in favor of octo-core machines, since NextComputing’s 8-core flextops are machines you wouldn’t want anywhere near your lap. Based as they are around the Intel Xeon 5300 processor, the NextDimension Pro and Evo can take advantage of the relatively low power requirements of 100W for two quad-core CPUs (down from 160 Watts for its power hungrier desktop equivalent). For a sense of just how expandable the NextDimension machines are, consider that they can hold up to twelve 160GB 2.5-inch 7200RPM hard disk drives. They also manage to pack in four PCI / PCI-e slots in the Evo model, and Firewire, Gigabit Ethernet, and support for 24GB of memory through four DMA channels on both models. These 20-pound desktop machines with a handle will be shown off at Interop Las Vegas later this month, but beyond that we’re not sure when or for how much you’ll be able to lug one away.
