China Defines Internet Addiction – Lists Symptoms

Chinese psychiatrists have defined Internet addiction and offered up a list of symptoms, a report indicates. The affliction has been classified for people who spend six hours or more online daily. The symptoms include poor sleep, irritability, mental distress and a "yearning to be online." To combat this growing addiction, the Chinese government has created halfway-houses and clinics to help wean their citizens off of the dependency.

American psychiatrists are still debating as to whether or not Internet addiction is the real deal or not.

Virgin Media Releases 50Mbps Cable Modem

Virgin Media has released their stunning 50Mbps cable modem, which relies on DOCSIS 3.0 technology. It hasn’t reached the top speeds recently seen in Ambit Broadband’s channel bonding modem or Sigbritt Löthberg’s offering, but 50Mbps is still a nice chunk of change. Virgin has yet to issue a release date or pricing, but it should be available by the end of the year.

Adult social networking site Zivity lays off 1/3 of staff

Zivity, aka "Myspace for porn addicts", has recently laid off a full 1/3rd of it’s staff. Who says the sex industry is recession proof? Wait, has anyone ever said that? It’s not as if the site employs thousands of people though. They cut back from 22 employees to 14.

The adult social networking site describes itself as a "community-powered showcase of female beauty.” This means you make a profile and then use it to gawk at girls when you should be getting something productive done. So, almost exactly like Myspace/Facebook then.

All doesn’t look bleak for the site though. They’ve secured 8 million in capitol and they recently hired Napster’s Jordan Ritter as their CTO. The site is still in private beta, however. Look for it to go public in the first quarter of 2009.

Well, it finally happened. Google has acquired DoubleClick for 2.1 billion dollars, in a much talked about deal. Why it was so controversial was because of anti-trust laws stating that the purchase of DoubleClick would give Google unprecedented access to personal information as well as a choke-hold on Internet advertising is illegal and would infringe on personal privacy.

Google states that the purchase would only benefit the consumer. Senator Palpatine – meet Anakin Skywalker.

Desparate Apartment Wives?

You know that show on ABC? Or is it NBC? Anyways, it about these 50+ year old women with tons of plastic surgery who don’t work and manage to not only ruin their own lives but the lives of everyone around them. Yet, I digress. These women, have no jobs yet roll around in "sick-ass" (in the parlance of our times) cars.

So, the whole point of the story (was there a point?) is that I saw this picture on some Internet site, and i had an idea for a Desperate Wives spin off.

Desperate Housewives …MTV style. It’s perfect. I’ll collect the check anytime.

WFR-20 Internet Radio

I hope they put all their efforts into the technology of this Wi-Fi radio, because they certainly ignored design..

This rather ugly thing is the Sangean WiFi internet radio (WFR-20) which offers up "direct access to over 6,000 Internet Radio stations (and 21,242 on-demand streams) in 250 locations from 60 genres," and you can organize your favorites in the My Stations folder.

Mid-Air Cell / Internet

A Swiss tech firm OnAir will be setting up service to allow airline passengers to use their cell phones and access the Internet on laptops during flights.

China’s Shenzhen Airlines will set up the service by mid-2009 and hope to have a demo aircraft available for the Beijing Olympics next year.

Shenzhen Airlines President Li Kun said: "We are very proud to be the first airline in China to provide passengers with the ability to communicate during flights."

OnAir has already signed deals with various European and Asian airlines that want to carry the technology, the firm said.

So what are we waiting for?

Google Rumors

With Google phone rumors flying everywhere, I thought I would indulge. If I were Verizon, Cingular, or any other phone company I would be scared, a new innovative and borderline CRAZY idea has hit the rumor mill. Free Cellular phone service, thanks to – Google. You read it right. FREE cell phone service. How is is this possible?

Google has a plan. They are going to bid on a piece of the radio wave pie for 4.6 billion give or take a 100 million or thus providing a platform for new software developments in the cell phone industry. The plan is to make cell phone service like Internet browsers the web surfer can pick his/her favorite and go from there. Except in Google’s case, it would be free for the user by generating revenue from the ads placed neatly in the Gphone.

This is a very loose and sketchy rumor I know, but the bits and pieces I have gathered have gotten me excited – and you should be too!

Ooma Offers Free Calling Within US

A new consumer VOIP startup – Ooma – launches on Thursday morning. Ooma allows consumers to use their normal phones to make and receive telephone calls, but at drastically reduced prices.

Vonage provides unlimited calling in the U.S. and Canada for a flat $25/month. Ooma, however, is charging for hardware only and all calls in the U.S. are free.

That hardware though, is not cheap and starts at $399, plus of course, you need that broadband Internet connection. That buys you a base hub. You plug broadband ethernet into one end, and a normal phone into the other, and youâ€™re all set.

You can wire your whole house with additional units, called Scouts, plugging one end into a normal phone jack and connecting it with a normal phone. Itâ€™s then part of the Ooma system and all calls will be free.

Every Ooma account includes two lines, and either can be accessed from either phone.
