Now That’s Wireless

Ermanno Pietrosemoli, president of a networking school in Venezuela, has set a new record for the longest communication link with Wi-Fi…a whopping 238 miles.
Together with Intel tech (which has created a way to electrically steer the signal, which in turn increases bandwidth) and MacGuyver techniques with LinkSys hardware, Pietrosemoli sent an 802.11 signal between two mountains in the Venezuelan Andes.

Emotional Social Intelligence Prosthetic

They say that verbal communication sends only part of a message across, while most of our talking is done via body language. The Emotional Social Intelligence Prosthetic is one device that helps even the most clueless individual decipher the nuances of body language, thanks to intelligent software programmed by MIT grad student Rana El Kaliouby. This software interprets emotions based on body language and facial expressions which are captured via a wearable computer/video camera combination. Do you think the police and authorities will be able to use this invention to help in their investigations when it comes to serious crime cases?

Green Computing
Google and Intel are teaming up to introduce more energy-efficient personal computers and server systems to save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. More efficient computing would reduce electricity consumption by eliminating wasted heat produced by computers and increased air conditioning to battle the heat problem.
Climate Savers Computing Initiative has alreadey signed ion Dell Inc., Hewlett-Packard Co., IBM, Lenovo Group Ltd., software maker Microsoft Corp., the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The program will set new efficiency goals for computers and software tools that manage power consumption, namely, a 90 percent efficiency standard for power supplies, said Urs Holzle, senior vice president of operations at Google.
"Today, the average desktop PC wastes nearly half of its power and the average server wastes one-third of its power," he added.
A 90 percent standard would cut greenhouse gas emissions by 54 million tons a year and save more than $5.5 billion in energy costs.
