What’s the Deal With USBs?

Ok, what’s the deal with all the USB accesories? I don’t get it. Everywhere I turn some designer comes up with an "uber" cleaver design or concept for a USB, what’s up with that? Who cares? Yeah, maybe that weird group of geeks in high school care enough to buy a (insert favorite thing here) USB gadget, but for corporate America? I just don’t see the appeal? Why spend money on a device that is going to be out dated in a couple of months anyway, when Apple comes out with some ultra cool and sexy alternative to USB’s?

Someone leave a comment and fill me in, please.

Warner Bros goes Exclusive

I just got a press release from Time Warner letting us all know that Warner Bros has chosen to go exclusive with the blu-ray format starting on the 1st of June. I guess this move will make the HD DVD team go bananas especially since Warner declares that the format war is over and that the blu-ray team has won. Read more here

This young man, Michal Tatarkiewicz is brilliant. Now, I know this really isn’t gadget related but it’s still Nerd worthy. This guy is drawing a subway in full scale in a gallery for an art/design showing. You aren’t likely to get any more obsessively geeky.

Fire trucks are too slow, when a fire breaks out they are at the scene days, even months later. (Although my girlfriend says otherwise) Well, here is a modified truck that will get anywhere to any fire in almost no time at all. That right folks, it’s a fire truck with a MIG 16 jet engine.

Jobo’s Giga Vu line has been geared towards photographers who are always looking for more and more storage, especially in the field.

The 160GB Giga Vu Pro Extreme adds support for Jobo’s photoGPS unit and comes with an SD/SDHC adapter. The regular specs are still the same: a 3.7-inch VGA screen, support for 100+ RAW formats, loupe viewing modes with dust detection, TV-out, PictBridge support.

Don’t expect them to be cheap either with the 80GB version at $599, the 120GB for $749, and the $160GB model for $899.

miVDOFX DV Cam

Another gadget for the YouTubers. This miVDOFX DV Cam will snap still images like a digital camera, but it will also allow you to add 18 built-in special effects and music instantly to your movies.

With a 1.5â€³ color screen, a 4X digital zoom, a built-in speaker, and an SD slot (expandable to 2GB), it will let you record from your ipod or MP3 player while filming.

No word on price or availability.

More Minority Report Tech with Panasonic Iris Scanner

I can’t think of any recent sci-fi movie that’s predicted as much near-term technology as Minority Report. First, there are all the touch-screen technologies with finger wagging and hand waving and such for arranging and accessing information. Now, Panasonic’s gone and developed an iris scanner that doesn’t require the scanee to concentrate on any given area. It uses a number of digital cameras to locate the iris and scan it, then identify the individual in only two seconds. A lot of practical applications, of course, like security checks and such, but I can’t help imagining walking through a mall and having my name called out. Just a little creepy, while also being pretty cool.

Actually, I can think of a whole slew of good uses for Zink’s hybrid digital camera/portable printer. Imagine meeting your insurance adjuster at the accident scene, and you get an instant copy of the picture he’s going to use in deciding how much money you should get. Sounds convenient to me. It’s a 7 megapixel unit with a 2-inch display and SD memory card, and so as a camera it’s just so-so. No pricing, but availability is expected by the end of the year.

Magic Images Can Be Seen Only with Digital Camera

Through some physics voodoo and a sprinkle of pixie dust, Kameraflage has created a means to create images that only show up on digital cameras. There are, of course, numerous uses for such a technology (although practical ones escape me at moment). Perhaps celebrities could use it to save particular messages for the paparazzi, who I’m sure by this point have gone digital.
