soldier holograms Army Tries to Develop Technology of the Future for the Battlefield

Dr. John Parmentola, Director of Research and Laboratory Management, the United States Army is on a mission to "make science fiction into reality." From the sound of everything, it seems like he might be playing World of Warcraft too much.

Some of the projects are cool but sound ridiculous, such as: regeneration, quantum ghost imaging, telepathy and mind erasing. Better yet, he wants to test telepathy research on subjects playing online multiplayer games. Parmentola’s explanation of the technology:

"Quantum ghost imaging, for example, is as complicated as it sounds. Basically it’s a phenomenon of physics that allows images to be rendered through the pairing of photons that do not reflect or bounce off an object, but off of other photons that did, thereby creating a sort of “ghost” image of it. This technology would enable the Army to generate images of personnel and equipment through clouds and smoke."

It all sounds pretty friggin’ cool, I just can’t wait to see it in action.

The future seems to be getter closer and closer with this virtual laser keyboard, which is pretty much a hologram. This high tech device canconnect to just about any pocket PC, laptop and PC. The virtual laser keyboard can be set up anywhere for easy access. All you need is a flat area to set it up. One downside is that it does not have a Bluetooth connection, bummer…

diesel catwalk hologram On the Catwalk

Diesel’s Summer/Spring ‘08 catwalk featured human models with CGI accompaniment. The creatures, animated holograms that were visible from both sides of the stage, interacted with the models during the aquatic-themed show. Barcelona animation studio Dvein worked with Danish production agency Vizoo to create the whimsical effects.

Remember during the last part of the Haunted House ride in Disneyland, you’d look in a mirror and see ghosts sitting next to you? I guess this is like that. But replace sunburned, fanny-packed tourists with people who look really, really hungry and mad.

holo darth sidious Star Wars 2

Yet again I have managed to write about Star Wars. This time its about holograms for video games. It was developed by SeeReal in Dresden, Germany, is the largest holographic video display ever built. For those of you who don’t know, holograms recreate all the light that would come from an object if it were really in front of you. A surface, or screen, diffracts light shone onto it to generate waves that interfere with each other to create the 3D effect.

This is some really cool technology (for the full article read here) and personally,  I can’t wait for holographic phones, so when someone calls their image pops up in an eerie and malicious way. Yeah, kind of like Star Wars.
