Hitachi Maxell has released a pair of noise-canceling headphones that work a bit differently from their cousins. The HP-NC20 headphones don’t require separate power. They simply connect to iPods via the dock connector. They manage about 20dB of noise reduction via their "Active Noise Rejection" system. They also manage to reduce your battery life by as much as 50%. The headphones will also only work with 4th gen or later iPods and iPod touches. They do not work with the iPhone. They are available now for about $80.

United Airlines is upgrading passenger comfort with lie-flat seating, and the Business cabin gets cool gadgets like new 15.4-inch LCDs, a USB port, and an iPod adapter to let you charge your iPod and play your own music and videos on the seat’s entertainment unit. You will have 20 channels of "stored XM audio," with an additional 30 channels of other "stored audio." They will even give you noise canceling headphones. No word on meals though…

So here’s what’s been confirmed about the Apple iPhone and the tid bits it doesn’t have. I have to admit, some things on the list suprised me. Why take a step backward on these features?

Stuff in Bold = Are you kidding me?

Doesn’t do this:

• Songs as Ringtones
• Games
• Any flash support
• Instant Messaging
• Picture messages (MMS)
• Video recording
• Voice recognition or voice dialing
• Wireless Bluetooth Stereo Streaming (A2DP)
• One-size-fits-all headset jack (May have to buy an adapter for certain headphones)

Stuff we already knew it didn’t have:
• 3G (EV-DO/HSDPA)
• GPS
• A real keyboard
• Removable battery
• Expandable Storage
• Direct iTunes Music Store Access (Over Wi-Fi or EDGE)

Just when we thought the 3 in 1 combo was enough.  Some of these missing in the iPhone are crucial to the way we communicate via cell phone.  Now here’s a few good reasons why you might want to wait for the second one.

As with speakers, cell phones, and sushi, you get what you pay for when it comes to headphones. So ditch the freebies that came with your MP3 player and upgrade to a pair that actually sound good. Sony’s in-ear headphones come with three sizes of silicone earbuds to ensure a tight fit — a necessity for comfort and sound isolation. Sure, you could pay two to three times as much for some other in-ear buds, but unless you’ve cranked up your MP3 files to audiophile sizes, you won’t miss anything with these. Price: $50

It’s worth it. Trust me.

I dropped my cell phone yesterday evening. It’s broken now. After futile attempts to put the antenna back on, and somehow fuse the plastic pieces together with my sheer strength, I gave up. Needless to say it didn’t work, and now I need to fork over $180 to Verizon because I don’t have insurance.

Then I hear of this cool new phone that is still in it’s prototype phase: The Yoyo phone. Its  designed for NEC by US designer Shaik Ridzwan and its a phone made to have the look and feel of a yo-yo. cool huh? The headphones are the "string" that wrap around the actual phone. It’s a novel design and I bet it’ll be a hit with cell phone droppers everywhere.

True story: We were on the NYC subway this morning, and spotted a Wall Street-type wearing what appeared to be wireless headphones, with no MP3 player in sight. Intrigued, we saw an iMuffs logo on the side, and noticed numerous controls on the headset itself. Hmmmmm. After a little Googling, we discovered that iMuffs are indeed wireless headphones, utilizing Bluetooth 2.0 technology! You can listen to your tunes from up to 30 feet away from your iPod, and you can even integrate your Bluetooth cellphone-when you receive a call, your iPod is instantly paused and you can talk through the iMuffs’ microphone. Genius. iMuffs can be charged through a USB port, or with the included charger. The iMuffs range from $150 – $180 USD, depending on the type of iPod you’re using.
