Fujitsu Throws Caution to the Wind, Makes Non-Stop HDD

While most hard drive manufacturers are concentrating on making drives that spin as seldom as possible, Fujitsu decided to go in the opposite direction. Their MHY2 BS series, up to 200GB, 5400RPM, SATA 2.5 inch drives, are meant to run non-stop. I suppose there are certain applications, like medical equipment and industrial systems, that benefit from perpetual motion. Pricing not available, but the drives will be available sometime in August.

Greener Hard Drives

Western Digital is entering the green arena of hard drives with its GreenPower initiative. Desktop, enterprise, CE and external hard drives are all included in sizes from 320GB to 1TB, and all allegedly will use 40% less energy.
The first to hit the market will be Western Digital’s 1TB Caviar as a WD My Book external drive later this month.

It’s Official – Our Computer Overlords will be Laser-Based

Radboud University Nijmegan (in the Netherlands, and quite a mouthful), has developed a laser-based storage system that is 100 times quicker than the plain old hard drive (POHD) we’re used to. There’s been a bunch of research into light-based computing, and much of it’s been pretty positive–if not yet quite practical. Now, if they can shrink this thing down to a reasonable size, they’ll really have something.

Cutie Bio Portable HD

Sarotech’s USB 2.0 100GB Cutie Bio portable hard drive is a cutie! But don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s a lightweight in security. It has a built-in fingerprint scanner to protect your data in the event it gets lost or stolen.
It also is ruggedly built to withstand serious bumps as the head parks itself in freefall. Appearing soon in S Korea for $162. Aving
