Dell Mini 9 Netbook Hacked to Offer Touchscreen Support

The Dell Mini 9 is one mod-friendly netbook. First people hacked OSX support. Then, someone figured out a way a rig a working GPS unit into the system. And now? A user named Deldotb of the myDellMini forums has turned the screen into a functional touchscreen.

They did it by strapping on one of those eBay touch panels and loading the appropriate Ubuntu drivers. It seems rather easy to do, the only negative being the loss of a USB port. Below is a video they made to show off the discovery. What’s next for the little netbook that could? Minesweeper?

Pharos Announces Traveller 117 and 127 – GPS-enabled Smartphones

Pharos has officially unveiled two new additions to their Windows Mobile GPS smartphone lineup. The Traveller 117 and 127 was announced by the company today. The units are both GPS-enabled phones that feature tri-band 7.2Mbps HSDPA. The phones also have a 2-megapixel camera and VGA touchscreens. The 127 features a QWERTY keyboard.

On the GPS front, Pharos Smart Navigator gives traffic updates, dynamic POI and FollowMe services all embedded within the phone. The units will be available on December 1st and will retail for around $530.

Navigon Releases 8100T Navigator – Calls it Uber-Premium

Navigon has released their 8100T navigator. The company describes the unit as "uber-premium." Why you may ask? Well, let’s take a look at the specs.

It includes a 4.8-inch display, brushed-metal housing, a 3D view using NASA terrain data, free real-time traffic updates for life, voice destination entry, Bluetooth handsfree support, text-to-speech functionality and an inbuilt lane assistant. Premium features to be sure. It still remains to be seen if it’s worth the hefty $599 price tag though.

Kmart Black Friday Ad Leaks – Deals on Electronics

Holux Announces GPSmile 62 GPS Unit – WQVGA Display

Holux has followed up their GPSmile 61 device with the appropiately named GPSmile 62. The GPS unit features a 5-inch WQVGA display, an "edge-free" design, an SD card slot, integrated speakers and a removable rechargable battery. The unit also includes a built-in multimedia player, Bluetooth and TMC support to keep you updated on traffic. The company has yet to issue a release date or pricing and they are mum as to whether or not the unit will hit stateside.

Navigon Releases 5100 Max and 2090S GPS Units Exclusively at Radio Shack

Navigon has released two new GPS units today, the 5100 max and 2090S. The duo reside exclusively at Radio Shack for the moment, however. The 5100 max features a 4.3-inch touchscreen, Reality View Pro / Lane Assistant Pro technology, handsfree Bluetooth support, text-to-speech and free real-time traffic updates for life. It’s little brother the 2090S features a 3.5-inch touch panel and most features of the 5100 max, besides Bluetooth. The 5100 max and 2090S are available now at Radio Shack for $299.99 / $199.99 respectively.

FCC Documents Announce that Nokia N85 Coming to North America

It’s official, the Nokia N85 is bound for North American shores. Some FCC documents advertise the forthcoming release by making the User Guide and SAR report part of the public record. Nokia has yet to officially release pricing or a release date yet though.

The Nokia N85 is a handset that features a bright OLED display, a series of audio functions and a full-fledged GPS service.

Motorola Releases MOTONAV TN20 and TN30 GPS Devices

Motorola has released two GPS navigators, the MOTONAV TN20 and TN30. The TN20 provides spoken street names and turn-by-turn directions. The unit also offers NAVTEQ 2D / 3D maps of the United States and a 3.5-inch touch panel. The TN30 takes all of those features and adds in maps of Puerto Rico and Canada, along with four million searchable points of interest and a 4.3-inch touchscreen. The TN30 also features Bluetooth headsfree support.

Both units include an SD slot for updating maps, a mini USB port for charging, speed limit display with warnings and on-screen tidbits regarding distance, arrival time, elevation and speed. They are only available at Radio Shack for now at the suggested retail price of $199.99 / $299.99, respectively.

Back in the halcyon days of, oh, eighteen months ago, the Pharos’ line of GPS-equipped Windows Mobile Handsets were the coolest thing going. Imagine a phone that knows where you are! It was like magic. Then came the iPhone and it’s ilk, all of whom were also rocking some serious GPS mojo. The Pharos’ line stopped seeming magical and started seeming like the way a bar looks when they turn the main lights on in order to scare the last few alcoholics out for the night.

No more! Pharos’ is back with the Dell powered Traveller 117 and Traveller 127. Sure, they come equipped with AGPS out of the box. That’s not what makes them special though. The Traveller series also possesses a VGA display, tri-band 7.2Mbps downstream HSPA and a 2-megapixel VGA front facing-camera.

They are for sale "covertly" at the Dell online store. Shh. Don’t tell anybody I told you.

Putin tests Russian GPS on his pup

Vladimir Putin has long pushed for GLONASS, a national GPS system in Russia. Reuters reports that the system had it’s first launch yesterday, in the form of a collar around Putin’s prized pup Koni. Now he’ll be able to track the adorable labrador if she accidentally ends in a Siberian prison camp, or even worse, at a Gorky Park concert. According to Putin, "She’s wagging her tail, she likes it."

The GLONASS system has faced numerous delays, having supposed to be fully operational early in the year. Still, this is a good sign that the system could be just about ready for a public unveiling. No word on if Putin plans on sending his dog into space like that other famous Russian mutt.

In other news, GLONASS is probably the worst acronym for anything ever made. It sounds like a disease where symptoms would include whooping cough and a runny discharge.
