Fujitsu Develops In-car Safety Technology to Sense Drowsiness and Wake You Up

Fujitsu is developing a sophisticated sensor system that actually detects when a driver gets drowsy or begins to fall asleep. It tracks the driver’s heart rate via the steering wheel and once it notices you are falling into a slumber it starts doing annoying things in order to wake you up. The system will roll it’s windows down, blast the stereo or even jolt the wheel. That’ll end that highway nap quick. The tech is currently unavailable in any cars as it’s still in the R&D stages.

Fujitsu Shows Off LifeBook with Secondary Touchscreen

Fujitsu has announced their LifeBook U820 which features a new innovation to laptops, a secondary 4 inch touchscreen located above the keyboard. The secondary touchscreen acts as a second display which means that you can move windows to and from the main display to the mini display. It defaults with a program launcher application but you can manipulate it any which way you want. Pretty cool. I can’t wait until someone figures out how to do gestures on it.

The laptop, in terms of specs, is pretty impressive still. It features a 2.26 Ghz Core 2 Duo, 256 MB ATI Radeon HD, 4 GB RAM, 320 GB Harddisk, Blu-ray drive, WiFi, Bluetooth and a 1.3 megapixel webcam. Not too shabby. The notebook will run you $1499. No word when it will be available.

Thank goodness somebody is addressing the wasted-space/elongated edges problem attacking our laptops. Each laptop has at least a centimeter or so of wasted space on those edges. That adds up! Worry no longer. Fujitsu understands

The company is set to release the LifeBook p8020. It’s a 12.1-inch ultraportable laptop that most certainly trims away those nasty edges. It’s a bit chubbier than we’d like but there is a lot underneath the hood. It features a Centrino 2 processor, 320GB HDD, 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi , Bluetooth, gigabit Ethernet, a fingerprint reader, DVD burner, gesture-friendly trackpad and a 1.3 megapixel webcam. Phew! And not to mention a screen that extends right to the end of the computer with minimal wasted space.

It will come out this November at an expected retail price of $1,799.

New Penryn Laptop?

Fujitsu’s 12.1-inch LOOX R ultra-portable is almost here! Weighing in at a mere 2.8 pounds (1.27-k) it has an LED backlit 1,280 x 800 display, up to 4GB or memory (oh yeah) and 120GB of disk, dual-layer DVD writer, Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11 a/b/g WiFi, SDHC slot, Firewire, fingerprint sensor, PCMCIA, and a battery running for 9.7-hours! Rumor has it this will be the first laptop to run a mobile version of Intel’s new Penryn CPU. We’ll know soon as it’s all happening in January.

Vein-Reading Mouse

Yes, you read that correctly – a mouse that reads veins, not fingerprints or irises or some other body part.

This USB mouse from Fujitsu uses their PalmSecure scanner plus some Windows compatible software to authenticate you (or your arm) by your veins.

Fujitsu Installs Mother of All Fuel Cells

In its on-going quest for fame and glory, Fujitsu has installed a fuel-cell (specifically, a proton exchange membrane, or PEM, fuel cell, which sounds way cool) at its Sunnyvale, CA campus. The monster fuel cell generates 200 kw of power, enough to provide for half of the compound’s data center’s cooling needs. Eventually, the unit will also provide heat, at up to 85% efficiency (compared to normal systems that only achieve 50%).

No, for those who are into tablets, those are some nice specs. Just the right size, performance would be fine for a Tablet (which to should never be expected to be a decent gaming machine), and a screen that’s high enough resolution without being blinding. Pricing will start at $1,599, and I’m sure go up from there with the appropriate options.

Fujitsu Throws Caution to the Wind, Makes Non-Stop HDD

While most hard drive manufacturers are concentrating on making drives that spin as seldom as possible, Fujitsu decided to go in the opposite direction. Their MHY2 BS series, up to 200GB, 5400RPM, SATA 2.5 inch drives, are meant to run non-stop. I suppose there are certain applications, like medical equipment and industrial systems, that benefit from perpetual motion. Pricing not available, but the drives will be available sometime in August.
