This glossy little cutie with removable interface cover for added protection represents LaCie’s Little Disk family of portable storage from 30 to 250 gigabytes.

The Little Disk is driver-free and pre-formatted for simple, one-step installation across all platforms and come in either 1.8- or 2.5-inch formats and with USB or Firewire connectivity.

“Designed for simplicity, the 1.8- and 2.5-inch drives are extremely portable and are bus powered, eliminating the need for A/C power. So whether you are on a bus, taking the train, or relaxing at the park, your data is always accessible.” said Nolwenn Rozen, LaCie product manager.

Suggested retail prices start at $99.99 for the 1.8-inch, $89.99 for the 2.5- inch USB 2.0 and $119.99 for the 2.5-inch Combo.

It rocks everywhere else, so why not there? Check out these specs:

  • Santa Rosa chipset
  • 13.3" LCD
  • Choice of Core 2 Duo processors
  • nVidia GeForce G8400M G External graphics
  • Up to 2.5GB RAM
  • 160GB SATA HDD
  • 802.11 a/b/g/n
  • Bluetooth 2.0
  • Optional GPS
  • Optional 3G
  • Optional TurboMemory
  • eSATA, HDMI, GPS RF in, USB, Firewire, and a bunch of other ports
  • 1.3 megapixel webcam
  • Fingerprint reader

All of this is encased in a nice magnesium allow case, black, of course, with leather handrests. Other than an SSD and LED option, I can’t think of anything this monster doesn’t have. Should be available in the next few months, starting at $2,000 or so–which I find entirely reasonable, but then again I’m guessing the price could get astronomical when options are added.

8 3 07 v3hd Need Some Inputs? The V3HD Firewire Has em All

You’ll have to forgive me, because I really don’t know much about this //V stuff. But anything with so many pretty lights and varied inputs must be impressive to someone in the know. For those who are, here are some specs on the V3HD FireWire Video Interface:

  • HD/SD BNC connections
  • Composite
  • Component
  • FireWire 400/800
  • S-Video
  • RS-422
  • XLR input/output
  • HDMI output

I suppose it’s all for capturing video and such (my "duh" statement for the month), and it can handle 32 simultaneous channels. Sounds impressive. No idea on pricing, and it should be available before the fourth quarter.

hub USB Hub Looks Like Medical Device of the Future

Can you imagine the poking and prodding this thing could do? If one imagines it larger than it really it, it’s actually quite frightening. But as a combination USB/Firewire hub, it’s pretty remarkable in a very dense field. Made by Ora-Ito, "The Hub" includes dual USB extension cables, a standard USB cable, a miniUSB cable, a USB fan and a USB light. I’m sure there’s artificial intelligence in there that wakes up the moment you place it on your desk, that performs alien medical experiments, but if you’re willing to take a chance it’s reasonably priced at $90.

Toshiba is whetting our gadget appetites with this sleek VARDIA hybrid HD DVD / HDD recorder in Japan. The 600GB RD-A600 and 300GB RD-A300 feature a pair of digital hi-vision HD tuners, Firewire, and HDMI and can write to HD DVD-R and DVD-RAM/R/RW media in addition to their respective hard disks. In fact, the HDD is the only point of divergence between the models. They’ll cost as much as $1,643 for the RD-A600 model when these start shipping later in the year.

Don’t count on a definite date though. Toshiba just released a HD-A2 HD DVD for $199 (after rebate), but their inventory is at zero, while Crutchfield had to increase the price by $100 as backlog orders come pouring in.
