Companies love to do this during tech wars. It happens again and again. Remember when Sony announced that the Wii selling a bazillion copies was just PR nonsense? Or when the Zune was pronounced a success because it had units on the shelf and not in the hands of consumers? Well, it’s happened again.

Microsoft’s Robbie Bach gave an interview to BusinessWeek recently regarding the Apple’s 6.9 million iPhones figure. He seemed vaguely disinterested and chalked it up to "launch buzz." 6.9 million units, launch buzz? Well, whatever floats your boat Robbie:

"Apple had a big launch of a new product, and they launched at scale in a lot of new countries with a lot of new [wireless] operators. This quarter, RIM is having its big launch, and at some point we’ll have our big launch. We’ll have to see where things normalize."

At least he admits that Windows Mobile 7 won’t continue to be vaporware until the year 2450. Maybe only until 2049. And as far as those iPhone figures being simple launch hype, see the Zune for the exact opposite.
