It’s official; the 700MHz bandwidth will be made available by TV broadcasts moving to digital and it will be auctioned off. This 700MHz range has the ability to travel long distances and penetrate walls, so it will be in demand, perhaps even providing a "third pipe" to US homes, in competition with the cable and telephone companies.

The Congressional Budget Office estimates the auction’s proceeds will amount to between $10 billion and $15 billion.

A total of 62 megahertz will be auctioned under the plan.
